Is It Worth It to Tailor Your Shirt?
Our Heritage Wall at our CYC Capitol Piazza store.
At CYC, we often get people asking us the benefits of a custom-tailored shirt. Is it worth it? My off-the-rack shirts fit me well enough. Do I really need a perfect fit? It all depends on the image you are trying to create for yourself. Firstly, do off-the-rack shirts hang off you? Secondly, do you find yourself compromising by folding up your sleeves (because the cuffs won't button)? Thirdly, do you leave the collar constantly unbuttoned (because the collar is too tight)? Finally, is comfort an issue - how do you find the material? Too stiff, too hot, too thin?
Are you looking for a solution that will fit perfectly and make you look and feel great? Let us
clue you in on the answer - custom-tailored shirt.
Why Custom-tailored Shirt
The first step to a custom-tailored shirt that is truly yours is a thorough consultation. Here, NOW! Singapore's Alex Dare sits with Store Manager, Jeremy, to select his preferred fabric.
For many men, a shirt is just a shirt, and you can buy it everywhere. Sometimes, the sleeves may be too long, which are a real pain. Or, the tie you've worn suffocates you in those long, drawn-out meetings. Those slim-fit shirts your wife had bought for you? It's a constant struggle between you and the buttons.
If you’re like many men, perhaps it had never occurred to you that there might be an alternative. Ask yourself - how much more productive will you be in the office, if you weren’t constantly wrestling with that uncomfortable tie? How much more comfortable will you be, if you weren’t so focused on making sure the buttons at your waist don’t burst, since you’ve discovered you’re not that ‘slim-fit’ after all?
At CYC Made To Measure, we’ve been tailoring since 1935, and built our business by helping men achieve a tailored fit. We are the expert on dressing men with the proper custom-tailored shirts, and we know how they can make all the difference.
What Defines a Great Fit
So, how is a custom-tailored shirt fit different from standard sizes? And what exactly is a great fit? Here are some ways to find out:
While Standing Still
- • Your shirt should sit right on the edge of your shoulders- not above, not below, but right on the edge.
- • The buttons work- if your buttons are pulling the front of your shirt apart, you need to accept that it’s just too small.
- • You’re not choking- with a properly fitted shirt, you can slip two fingers easily between your neck and the collar.
- • The perfectly fitted shirt sleeve will end right by the indent at the base of your thumb- any lower and it’s too long. Any higher, and it’s too short.
- • You can’t pinch too much! If you hold up your arm and you’re able to pinch any more than 2-3 inches of fabric, your shirt’s too big, it’s as simple as that.
- • You should be able to raise your arms straight in front of you without feeling the fabric stretch precariously across your back.
- • When you tuck in your shirt, and you can raise your hands above your head without your shirt tucking out, it’s a great fit! Ditto if you can bend over to tie your shoelaces and your shirt stays right where it’s supposed to be.
- • If you’re wearing your shirt untucked, raise your arms and make sure none of your belly shows. If it does, you need a better fit.
However, more often than not, a commonplace observation is that different brands utilise different cuttings, and this can be frustrating, especially when you have to resort to buying different sizes! But, if you are looking for a consistent, flattering and comfortable shirt, you are at the right place.

About Egyptian Cotton
The journey of a well made shirt starts from the finest cotton plant.
For centuries, Egyptian cotton, a variety of Gossypium barbadense, has known for its superior quality, its incomparable softness and luxurious feel against your skin. It is hand picked to reduce the stress on its fibres, therefore preserving its unique qualities. Its rarity meant it makes up for less than 1% of the world's cotton supply. Egyptian cotton’s comparatively longer fibres and unique strength makes it one of the most stress-resistant fabrics in the world, which means you’ll have your custom-tailored CYC shirt for years to come - our clients can vouch for that.
One's a company, and two's a crowd
Fabrics are either single or two-ply. When the raw cotton is spun into two yarns and then woven together, it is known as a two-ply. The resulting fabrics is softer, finer and fade-and-crease resistant. Most importantly, the shirt is durable enough to last a lifetime, especially if you take extra care for your precious shirts. For instance, avoid soaking your shirts overnight, and use lukewarm, instead of warm water when trying to rid of stains on your shirts.
We use only the highest quality Egyptian or two-ply cotton fabrics from Italy, Switzerland and Austria. Only by using the best, can we outfit you for success. Our top-notch fabrics speak for themselves.
