You're known for your fantastic choice of Liberty print shirts. Can you tell us what draws you to such unique patterns and fabrics?
It’s like the prints just speak to me. Sometimes, the pattern itself might catch my fancy, but a different colourway with that perfect shade of blue just grabs my attention and I must have it. Liberty’s Tana Lawn is amazing because it nails that balance between fabric texture and print quality — soft to the touch, with bold colours that stand out, like wearing a little piece of art fresh from the artist’s canvas. One day, I’d love to get my hands on a shirt made from Liberty’s silk twill for a special occasion.
How has Jessica, your go-to tailoring consultant, helped you refine your style and ensure the perfect fit over the years?
When I first started, I went all in with customisations, and Jessica was amazing at giving me advice whenever I was close to going a bit too overboard. She helped me find that perfect balance, and we definitely learned a lot from those early choices.
You trusted CYC with your wedding suits. What made you choose us for such a significant occasion, and how did the suits enhance your special day?
I have been impressed with the CYC team’s expertise and professionalism since the first time I walked in to place my first order. For example, my thighs are on the larger side from sports, so the team always had to take extra time whenever I tailored pants to do fittings and adjustments to get the pants just right. This was even before I met my girlfriend (now wife), so I already knew my wedding suit would be from CYC.
It was also great that I could make small adjustments to the wedding suit (jacket and pants) leading up to the wedding, especially since I was on a diet and unsure how the fit would change. Don’t tell my wife but I think the wedding was just a good excuse to get more suits!
How do you see your personal style evolving now that you're a father, and how do your custom shirts play a role in that?
Honestly, my physique has changed for the bigger, and I’m leaning more towards oversized tailored shirts now. It might actually be a good thing because the looser fit allows for more fabric and consequently even more prints! Plus, it’s a fun bonus to be able to match with my daughter or dog—like having a bandana made from the same fabric as my shirt!
What does a typical workday look like for you, and how do your CYC shirts fit into your professional life?
As the lead for technical development at a pharmaceutical company, my day can range from running around in the lab to overseeing trials on the manufacturing floor. The casual oversized fit of my CYC shirts is perfect for staying comfortable, and I like to think the fun prints bring a little extra colour to my colleagues’ day.
Do those unique shirts of yours often spark conversations?
Definitely! I once had a colleague come up to tell me that he had a sudden urge to go for a holiday in Hawaii upon seeing my shirt. I’ve also had custom shirts made for Chinese New Year – most memorable were the ones for the Year of the Tiger and the recent Year of the Snake. My relatives and colleagues were pleasantly amused when they spotted the zodiac animals on my shirt.
What are some things you value most in life, and how does that translate into your relationship with made-to-measure clothing?
Life is fleeting, so I believe in doing what I love and enjoying nice things along the way. When it comes to clothing, getting something that’s just right for me and makes me feel good fits this belief.
What's a dream or goal you're currently working towards?
I have been working on getting a bit fitter this year, especially after the birth of our daughter. I want more energy to keep up with her when she starts running around, and also because I have a whole wardrobe of Liberty shirts that I cannot fit into right now—hoping to wear them again soon!
What advice would you give to someone considering tailored shirts, especially those who want to incorporate unique fabrics?
I would suggest starting with smaller, simpler prints and sticking to colours that you are comfortable with. After the first few iterations, go ahead and have some fun—try bigger, bolder prints for that cocktail night with friends.
