300k Masks for Migrants Project FAQ

Updated 16 April 2020

I'm game and I've signed up! What do I do next?

We are currently sending out details on a rolling basis. If you've signed up via our form cyctailor.com/300kmasks, we will have your email and will contact you as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience on this matter.

What is included in each mask kit?

Pre-cut fabrics, twist-tie wire, and elastics. You will need to provide your own thread.

What if I run out of thread?

Here is a resource that was recommended to us:

Threads from Sing Mui Heng

Note that they take a few days for delivery, so you might want to order them beforehand.

How do I sew it? Our video sewing instructions are here: https://www.cyctailor.com/post/sewing-guide-cyc-face-masks

Can I hand-sew them?

We do not recommend hand sewing them for such a large quantity.

How long does it take to sew a mask?

Depending on your skill level, it should take around 10-30 minutes to sew a fabric mask with the help of a sewing machine.

I can't commit to 300 in 10 days. Can I still sign up?

At the moment, we are only accepting volunteers who can commit to sewing 300 in 10 days.

Since these masks will be used and re-used by migrant workers, we need experienced sewers who are confident of their sewing abilities.

I'm not sure I can finish them in 10 days. Can I have more time?

Yes. We are not policing volunteers on this, since it is a volunteer project. But we do hope that you will be able to stick to the deadline given - it will help us with regards to pick-ups and drop-offs.

I can't sew but want to help!

You can consider donating to the Migrants Workers' Centre's 'Migrants We Care' campaign. It has been set up specifically for this COVID-19 period:

'Migrants We Care' Campaign

Can I sew them at home?

Yes. The masks are to be sewn at home. We will contact you via e-mail with details with regards to collection and delivery.

I signed up for the previous 200kmasks project, do I need to sign up again?

Our conditions have changed, and we are now only able to give mask kits to people who can sew 300 masks in 10 days.

How do I know that the masks will go to migrant workers?

We are working with the Migrant Workers' Centre. They will send the finished masks directly to the foreign workers.
